The historical origin of Chiclayo is not clearly mentioned in ancient documents. However, it is known that the word "Chiclayo" means "the place where there are green branches" in the old Mochica language, and Chiclayo seems to have first appeared on the route between old Zaña and Lambayeque in the mid-16th century. There are two separate traditions concerning its origin. According to one tradition, a small, modest settlement was established in 1553 next to the Cinto Irrigation site for the "muleros" (merchant traders who used mules to carry cargo) traveling between Zaña and Lambayeque. It is said that this original settlement was built next to the Cinto Irrigation where the fortress of Cinto (a chieftain of the Collique community) had existed. The other tradition is based on the assertion of Monseñor Arroyo that Chiclayo was founded on July 21, 1559, when the main church and convent were established by a Franciscan missionary.
During the colonial period, Chiclayo was nothing more than an outer part of the older town of Lambayeque. At that time it was not really a town but was the local Franciscan Parish with the name of San Francisco de Chiclayo. In 1827, the Republican Congress of Peru formally recognized Chiclayo as a distinct village included in the Province of Lambayeque in the Department of La Libertad. On April 15, 1835, it was upgraded to the status of a city with the name of "Heroica". Three days later, on April 18, 1835, the Province of Chiclayo was created as a result of a new political division of the Department of La Libertad. Subsequently, in 1874, the importance of Chiclayo increased when it became the capital of an entire department in addition to being the capital of a province. Prior to December 1, 1874, the Department of La Libertad was larger than it is now and included what is currently the Department of Lambayeque. However, on December 1, 1874, the Department of Lambayeque was founded as a separate entity and Chiclayo was officially recognized as the capital of the department and also as the provincial capital of the Province of Chiclayo.
The Department of Lambayeque encompasses 14,231.30 square kilometers, including 18 square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean in which are located several islands. It has an immense expanse of desert, most of which is flat, but part of which inclines gradually to the edge of the Cordillera Occidental mountain range. The coastal region has a subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 22 degrees centigrade. (i.e. 72 degrees Fahrenheit). During summer (December through March) the sky is often clear and the weather tends to be hot and sticky. During the rest of year, the coastal region suffers from the coastal grey fog known as "the garua" which blots out the sun. There is hardly any rainfall in the coastal areas during the entire year, but the garua causes these areas to be constantly humid. The Department of Lambayeque, which faces the Pacific Ocean on the west, lies next to other three departments: Piura on the north, Cajamarca on the east, and La Libertad on the south. The department of Lambayeque is divided into three provinces and is subdivided into 33 districts: (1) the Province of Chiclayo (capital Chiclayo - 15 districts), (2) the Province of Ferreñafe (capital Ferreñafe - 6 districts), and (3) the Province of Lambayeque (capital Lambayeque - 12 districts).
Chiclayo, the capital of the coastal desert Department of Lambayeque, is situated at 06-46-21 L.S. and 79-50-47 L.W. and is 22 meters above sea level. It is currently an important commercial center of Northern Peru, and is the fourth largest city in Peru with a fast-growing population of over 400,000 inhabitants in three urban districts: Chiclayo, La Victoria, and José Leonardo Ortiz. Prior to 1987, Chiclayo was not a tourist attraction. It was neither a colonial city with a history interesting enough to attract visitors nor a resort town with beaches or beautiful scenery. However, in 1987 there was dramatic news of the discovery of a royal Moche tomb at Sipán about 30 km southeast of Chiclayo. This discovery has been called the most important archaeological discovery in Peru in the last 50 years. The Peruvian archaeologists have recovered hundreds of dazzling and priceless artifacts from the site. As Sipán is best visited from Chiclayo, the city's tourist industry has been rapidly developing in recent years. The spectacular finds are currently displayed in the Bruning Museum in Lambayeque.
Chiclayo is easily accessible from Lima, the capital of Peru. Most major bus companies operate up and down the coast along the Pan-American Highway. It costs US$13.3 (40 nuevo soles) for the eleven-hour drive. There are several daily flights between Chiclayo and Lima. The airplane trip costs US$59 and takes only one hour. Visitors in Chiclayo may travel from there southward toward Trujillo and northward toward Piura on the Pan-American Highway. It takes three hours to reach either destination, and several companies provide bus transportation hourly through the day. Chiclayo is also known as the transportation center for travelers wishing to go to inland provinces such as Cutervo, Chota, Santa Cruz, and Jaén in the Department of Cajamarca.
The local broadcasting scene evidently changed during the period (approximately ten years) since I last visited Chiclayo. When I first went to Chiclayo in October of 1985, Radio Chiclayo, Radio Lambayeque, and Radio Délcar (which, according to old WRTHs, had transmitted on shortwave many years ago until the 1960s), were still existence on medium wave. There were five stations on medium wave: OBX1G Radio Heroica (1020 kHz), OBX1L Radio Star (1100 kHz), OAX1E Radio Chiclayo (1190 kHz), and OAX1I Radio Lambayeque (1300 kHz), Radio Délcar (1520 kHz). Four stations were in operation on FM: OCZ1A Radio Chiclayo (94.1 MHz), OCZ1F Radio Star (98.3 MHz), OCZ1B Radio Délcar (99.1 MHz), and OCZ1C Radio Panamericana (101.1 MHz).
In September of 1998 during my third visit in Chiclayo, I made a band scan in order to investigate the existence and nature of any broadcasting activity. I noticed that 17 medium wave stations and 26 FM stations were on the air, and some stations outside of Chiclayo were easily audible in the daytime. The following lists are based on my monitoring and the official frequency list of the Ministry of Transports and Communications.
